  • Layer Up – This is perhaps the simplest and most cost-effective tip to stay warm. You already have sweaters, socks, and more-than-likely, thermals. Put them on!
  • Open the Curtains – Let the sun do the work! Open your curtains during sunny days and you can gain as much as 5 degrees or so just from the sun.
  • Close the Curtains – When the sun goes down and temps drop, close the curtains so the heat stays inside rather than escaping through the windows.
  • Adjust Ceiling Fans – Heat rises and a fan that rotates clockwise can push the heat that is up near the ceiling down to where you are.
  • Sleep with a Hot Water Bottle, Heating Pad, or Electric Blanket – You can see big savings by adjusting the temp to be lower when you sleep, but if you are chilly then consider getting a hot water bottle, heating pad, or electric blanket.
  • Take a Hot Shower – Shower with hot water before bed or first thing in the morning to warm you up instead of turning up the thermostat.
  • Unblock the Vents – Move furniture, toys, clothes, other objects than may be in the way of the warm air coming out of the vents.
  • Leave the Oven Door Open – 350 degrees is hot! Do not let that heat go to waste. Leave the oven door open when you are done cooking or baking to allow it to spread throughout the home.
  • Cuddle – Pets, kids, significant others—all put out body heat. Snuggle up under a blanket together for this natural heat source. This is one of our favorite tips to stay warm.
  • Prevent Drafts – If you notice drafts around windows or doors, adding new weather stripping can help. As a quick fix, you can also use an old towel as a draft-stopper at the threshold of your doors or windows.
  • Close Off Any Unused Rooms – Get the heat to where it needs to be. If you are not using a room, close the door and the vents so the heat is distributed to where you are. Be careful not to close off too many rooms though, as this can cause ventilation problems throughout your home.
  • Build a Fire – If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace – gas or wood burning, use it to heat up your home.
  • Close the Fireplace – When your fireplace is not in use, be sure to close it up so warm air does not escape though the chimney.
