Frequently Asked HVAC Questions

HVAC Question 1: What is HVAC?

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, also known as HVAC, are complicated mechanical systems that keep your home comfortable by controlling the temperature and humidity levels.

HVAC Question 2: What are signs that my HVAC system is not performing optimally?

  • Mold growth or air smells musty. This could indicate an issue with ventilation.
  • You feel sick, cough, or sneeze when you are home, but do not when you are not at home. Your filter may need changing or air ducts cleaned to get rid of excess particles in the air.
  • You wake up congested or with a headache. Unclean, low-quality air can cause all sorts of health problems.
  • You experience high utility bills. An inefficient, old HVAC system or an HVAC system that needs repairs will cost more to run.
  • Your home has hot or cold spots or is uncomfortable. Your HVAC system should be able to maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature year round. If you are experiencing problems, it may be a sign you need to have your system serviced or replaced.

HVAC Question 3: How can I improve the air my HVAC system puts out?

HVAC Questions | St. Louis HVAC Tips

There are many things that you can do to improve comfort and air quality in your home. For example, some tips include:

  • Regular maintenance: This is important to keep all components properly working. A yearly tune-up can catch small problems before they turn into larger ones.
  • Filter replacement: This is your first line of defense against bad air. If the filter is dirty, you will get dirty air circulating in your home. It can also reduce system performance and efficiency.
  • Use programmable thermostat: A programmable thermostat makes sure your system runs at the appropriate times of the day instead of times when you are not at home. This will help save you on utility bills.
  • Install a whole-house humidifier: Balanced relative humidity will protect against the damaging effects of too much or not enough moisture.

HVAC Question 4: Should I have my ducts cleaned?

Excessive dust and debris in your ducts from remodeling projects, nearby construction projects, and having the windows open, can cause the allergy-inducing particles to be released into the air when your HVAC system is on. You air quality goes down and you could become sick or at the very least find yourself coughing and sneezing. We do recommend an occasional sweep of your duct systems to keep your air quality high. You should also change the air filter regularly and may want to consider installing special air purifiers and cleaners.

HVAC Question 5: Is a bigger HVAC system better?

Not necessarily. It is important to get a system sized appropriately for your home. Factors such as your home’s square footage, height of ceilings, type of insulation, number of windows, number of floors, climate zone, etc. are things that we look at to determine the right size system.
