Why Clean or Change Your Air Filters?

Having clean air filters in your AC is imperative to ensure your well-being and the health of your family. HVAC filters clog up frequently, as the debris-filled air passes through them while your AC is working. Regular cleaning and/or changing of the air filter can ensure you receive clean cold air from your AC and you do not suffer from any allergies. Additionally, a clogged-up air filter can increase your energy consumption tremendously, as your AC works harder to cool your room.

A Step-By-Step Guide to Change Your Filter

In this article, we explain the step-by-step procedure of how to change and dispose off your old HVAC filters in a safe manner.

  • Step 1: Find out where your air filter is located: Your air filter can be located in different places, depending on the model and design of your air conditioner. The air filter is typically located either in the bottom portion of the up-flow or the top portion of the down-flow vertical AC system. You may also have other appliances, such as the window air conditioner unit, return air register, or air handler cabinet, which contain filters of their own. First, identify where all the filters are located, so you can get to work without hassle.
  • Step 2: Figure out the size and model of air filter you need and get it: The next thing to do is to look up the model, type, and size of air filter your appliance uses. If you are experienced with HVAC cleaning, you will be able to recognize the filter model on sight. But for those who can’t, you can always look it up in your AC manual. In case you do not have the manual, just search for the air filter that your AC brand uses online. You can also always call us at Galmiche & Sons, to find out what type of air filter you need to use and to get the part needed.
  • Step 3: Take the old filter out of your AC unit: Remember to switch off your AC before doing any servicing or repairs. Then using a screwdriver, unscrew the nails of the panel covering the AC. Find the location of your HVAC filter. Next, gently pry it out. You can use this moment to clean any large debris inside the unit with a large cloth or a small vacuum cleaner nozzle.
  • Step 4: Replace the old air filter with a clean new one: Next, take the new air filter and orient it in the same direction that the old one faced. This ensures your AC works properly after installing the new air filter. Put back the panel covering the AC unit and switch on the AC to see if everything is working fine. If you have done it correctly, your AC should work as well as new.
  • Step 5: Dispose of the used filter carefully: Air filters cannot be recycled. So, you will need to throw the old filter out. The following is often the best way to dispose of the old clogged-up air filter:
    • Find a plastic bag large enough to hold the old filter and place the filter in the bag.
    • Knot the bag tight to prevent the dust from escaping the filter.
    • Throw the filter in the garbage bin outside.
    • You can also place the filter in a paper bag and duct tape the mouth of the bag and toss it in the garbage.
